From Alison Doyle, your Guide to Job Searching
Unemployment insurance is going to fall off a cliff at the end of December. In addition to the tax cuts which will expire, and the spending cuts that will impact government programs, federal extended unemployment benefits, which provide all long-term unemployment compensation, will expire on December 29, 2012.

The Unemployment Cliff
In the past, when benefits were in danger of expiring, unemployment was gradually cut back and unemployed workers could continue to collect benefits until they ran out of the tier they were on. It's different this year.

Unemployment 2013
In order for unemployed workers to received extended benefits and additional weeks of unemployment beyond their state benefits Congress would have to pass new legislation to cover 2013.

About.com Video: What Is an Unemployment Extension?
In December the EUC program is scheduled to expire. What that means is that unless congress acts to reauthorize the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program no EUC benefits will be payable to any worker effective January 1, 2013.

What to Do When Unemployment Runs Out
Here's information on where to get help when your unemployment checks run out, including federal and state government assistance, local organizations which may be able to help, and where to find job search assistance.
