 ICYMI: Democrats and Republicans Negotiating Deal to Avert Shutdown In case you missed it, Democrats and Republicans are back at the negotiating table, trying again to avert a government shutdown.
I know what you're thinking: this again? The last time Democrats and Republicans got together to pass a budget deal, all they could manage to agree on was a stop-gap measure that would last until Feb. 18.
Earlier this week, legislators got together to negotiate a budget deal that would fund the government, but Republicans and Democrats can't seem to agree on spending measures for the Pentagon and non-defense programs. Republicans have also drawn a line in the sand on further pandemic spending, while 49 Republicans in the House and Senate have signed a letter threatening a shutdown over vaccine mandates.
But without a finalized budget bill, legislators are considering stop-gap funding bills that would kick the can down the road, and avoid a shutdown… for now.
